Description

The PUMP (Pittsburgh Urban Mathematics Project) Algebra curriculum embedded the Algebra Cognitive Tutor into a complete redesigned course. The authors “would redesign the whole course from the bottom up including replacements for the textbook, new kinds of assessments, use of collaborative learning in the classroom portion of the curriculum, and new teaching approaches.” The recommended structure was non-technology text materials and classroom practices for 3 days a week and tutor use in the computer lab the other 2 days a week. It was evaluated in the 1993–94 school year in three city schools with a high proportion of low income and low performing students.

Design Implications

Context

Target Learners

  • high-school algebra students, including a high proportion of low income and low performing students

Learning Goals
