Description¶
Each team received a folder containing a sticker collection sheet, a laminated RAP poster outlining the strategy steps, 26 informational texts graded from 100 to 300 words, and two types of notepaper (with and without boxes and lines). The article states the poster presented an expanded six-step sequence: "(1) Read a paragraph. (2) Clarify unknown words. (3) Ask yourself: What is the main idea of the paragraph? (4) Put the main idea in your own words. (5) Read the next paragraph. (6) And so on." Three intermediate steps were added to make the strategy more accessible to very low-performing tutees.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Materials must be handed out at the beginning of each session and collected at the end
- Texts must be numbered serially and ordered by increasing length and difficulty
Constraints¶
- The expanded six-step poster sequence modifies the original three-step RAP acronym to accommodate very low-performing tutees
Target Learners¶
- fourth-grade tutees with severe reading comprehension difficulties
- fourth-grade peer tutors
Learning Goals¶
- applying the RAP strategy steps to expository paragraphs
- clarifying unknown words before identifying main ideas
