Description¶
Rapid-cycle deliberate practice (RCDP) is a clinical simulation strategy characterized by "short, repetitive cycles of specific tasks, briefly interrupted whenever correction is needed." During pauses, "immediate directive feedback is provided," letting participants adjust practice in real time until mastery. Unlike traditional simulation, where feedback occurs only in post-event debriefing, RCDP integrates feedback into practice. The article uses RCDP as the simulation type for a pediatric EVD management scenario and reports it as promising for teaching the subject.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A checklist of expected actions to verify task fulfillment and trigger interruptions with timely feedback
- A trained facilitator experienced in clinical simulation
Constraints¶
- The article describes RCDP as still underutilized in nursing education and the study as a preliminary assessment needing further research
Target Learners¶
- nursing students
- nursing professionals
Learning Goals¶
- technical skills for external ventricular drainage management
- clinical judgment
- clinical decision-making
