Description

RSA is a classroom technique integrating extensive reading into an existing reading course through three stages: R (reading a self-selected graded reader outside class), S (sharing the story in three rounds of progressively larger groups with note-taking and journals), and A (acting the nominated story as a play). The article describes it as "a means to perform extensive reading activities". In the study it ran over 15 hours of a 15-week semester with 24 Grade-10 EFL students.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Students each select a book from a list of graded readers suited to EFL students
  • Time allocated within normal reading instruction for sharing rounds and play preparation

Constraints

  • Time constraints arose because RSA shared hours with teacher-directed intensive reading; a stand-alone extensive reading course is suggested
  • Students lacked storytelling skills initially, reading notes aloud instead of telling stories

Target Learners

  • EFL secondary students (Grade 10)

Learning Goals

  • English reading habit
  • listening, speaking and writing skills
  • confidence expressing ideas in English
