Description

The article proposes a step model (Figure 1) describing how a reading habit develops in low literate adults. It begins with a healthy library containing a variety of books with easy access and freedom to select, leading to enjoyment and a sense of accomplishment, then a positive reading attitude, then motivation to read more, culminating in a reading habit, independent readers, and language development. The authors present it as "a model with the steps that favor the development of a reading habit", grounded in their finding that only participants with access to books and encouragement developed habits.
