Description

The experimental treatment was a reform-based instructional method combining whole-class discussion with varied instructional strategies adapted to students' learning styles. Its printed features include that "Discussion method was employed to encourage every student to talk mathematics", manipulatives were provided for demonstration of concepts and student interaction, supervised short written review exercises ended each lesson, and the Collin Rose learning style questionnaire identified auditory, visual and tactile learners. The traditional comparison condition used lesson notes along the traditional expository method with teacher-led explanation and take-home assignments with no immediate feedback.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Research assistants who were the regular mathematics classroom teachers delivered both conditions
  • The Collin Rose learning style questionnaire was administered to identify students' learning styles

Constraints

  • Studied with year-one NCE students in two Anambra State Colleges of Education on the coordinate geometry content of equations of straight lines and of circles

Target Learners

  • Year-one National Certificate in Education (NCE) mathematics students in Colleges of Education

Learning Goals

  • Mathematics achievement in coordinate geometry (equations of straight lines and circles)
  • Retention of mathematics knowledge
