Scaffolding capacities required for an educational-oriented remote laboratory

Design · All designs

Description

The article defines a set of pedagogical capabilities that remote laboratory environments must provide to effectively support practical learning: a common view of the experiment, shared control over remote experiments, synchronous communication tools, social/artifact awareness tools, learning analytics for tutoring, and a user-friendly authoring tool. The authors motivate this with the claim that "the scaffolding around the lab may be at least as important as the lab itself" and with a survey where students pointed to help and support and engagement. They use the framework to evaluate six existing remote lab projects, concluding they "do not focus on pedagogical concerns".

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • The remote lab environment should give learning actors access to a common view of the experiments and shared control, plus synchronous communication, awareness, learning analytics and authoring capacities

Constraints

  • Existing projects studied (iLab, LiLa, LabShare, WebLab-Deusto, Lab2Go, Go-Lab) partially or fully lack most of these capacities, and none takes experiment instructional design into account

Target Learners

  • distant learners in STEM higher education

Learning Goals

  • inquiry skills and practical disciplinary skills through remote laboratory work
