Description¶
The article proposes a framework in which robotics used as a mechanical platform inside cooperative learning pedagogy creates a nurturing instructional environment that builds positive attitudes toward STEM. Its core ideology is that "students learn difficult concepts when they can play", implemented as a curriculum that is "90% hands-on laboratory classroom style". Hands-on activity is argued to promote self-efficacy, which sustains interest and supports further STEM pursuit, connecting critical thinking, STEM interest, and self-efficacy.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Cooperative teams of three or four members with rotating roles (builder, parts specialist, programmer, tester) so all members experience each phase of robotic construction and programming
- A hands-on laboratory format in which students immediately apply lecture content
Constraints¶
- The article states it is difficult to determine whether the robotics, or robotics coupled with cooperative learning, promoted the interest
- The authors state the findings are premature and require further analysis of the metrics, scales, and assessments
Target Learners¶
- sixth-grade middle school students
- undergraduate service-learning students mentoring middle schoolers
- girls and underrepresented minorities in STEM
Learning Goals¶
- critical thinking
- STEM interest and self-efficacy
- robotic construction and programming skills
- collaboration
