Description¶
RPQ is a learning package combining a teaching method with modern-physics topics (the Large Hadron Collider at CERN and the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropic Probe), applied to three physics sections of 91 students. It comprises students' autonomous reading of popular articles and online resources, PowerPoint presentations of learning results, and questioning about unclear elements of reading and peer-presented materials, with sections broken into three teams to encourage discussion. Its rationale draws on "read to learn", "present to learn", and "question to learn" practices.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Teacher-researcher-suggested popular articles and online resources on recent scientific discoveries in physics
- 16 forty five-minute free-topic sessions across the semester, including sessions for pre and post assessments
Constraints¶
Target Learners¶
- senior high-school students (17-18 years)
Learning Goals¶
- perceptions of physics learning as developing logical and creative thinking
- understanding of recent scientific discoveries in physics
Claims¶
- Rpq Shifts Attitudes Logical Creative Thinking [+M]
- ED produces significantly better attitude shifts than RPQ across reasoning levels, while RPQ concrete-operational thinkers show a -4.2% drop on creative-thinking attitudes [~W]
