Description¶
RTI is a targeted, tiered approach to identifying the needs of low-achieving pupils: "a whole class approach as preventive teaching (Tier 1), followed by small group remediation (Tier 2)" and one-to-one tutoring (Tier 3) for those who do not respond to small group instruction. In this evaluation CUREE developed the tools, resources and training, supported by AfA3As Achievement Coaches. Key elements include needs analysis via a Close-case Analysis Tool, a menu of research-based interventions for different literacy areas, and Tracking Pupil Progress Tools used at mid-intervention and end-of-intervention points.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Teachers trained to use the diagnostic and tracking tools; identification of eligible pupils using pre-test results, teacher judgement and the RTI diagnostic tool
Constraints¶
- Duration, intensity and frequency of treatment were allowed to vary from school to school; in this trial the summer-term timing limited delivery
Target Learners¶
- Year 6 pupils at risk of not achieving Level 4 English at Key Stage 2
Learning Goals¶
- Literacy (reading, comprehension, spelling, vocabulary, phonics, fluency)
