Description

A conceptual model in which schools first implement an evidence-based program with fidelity so teachers internalize the program theory and achieve proficiency, then transition to a structured adaptive phase in which teachers collaboratively tailor the program to their context. The article describes it as "a structure for chronologically organizing the fidelity-focused and adaptive approaches," grounded in a Vygotskyan scaffolding perspective and Frank et al.'s focus, fiddle, friends progression. The present study tests it by interacting condition with teachers' prior Core READS experience.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Teachers must first master the program as designed through fidelity-focused implementation before entering the adaptive phase
  • The adaptive phase requires program management structures, such as classifying components as core versus noncore and collaborative working groups

Constraints

  • The article notes no experimental studies had directly tested this approach prior to this trial
  • Adaptation introduces the possibility that teachers alter practices in ways that make them less effective

Target Learners

  • elementary school students in high-poverty schools
  • elementary school teachers implementing literacy programs

Learning Goals

  • teacher learning about the intervention
  • changes in instructional practice
  • improved student reading comprehension
