Scenario-based design pattern: select a scenario, adapt it to context, then add domain content

Description

The SCY design pattern treats instructional design as selecting a reusable pedagogical scenario blueprint, adapting it, and adding domain content. The original two-step process (select scenario, instantiate with content) was extended in practice with an intermediate adaptation stage: "the initial two-step design process (select scenario, instantiate with content) was extended with an intermediate stage in which designers adapted a scenario by leaving out LASs" or specific ELOs that did not fit their context. Designers first decide target group and learning goals, select one of the 12 scenarios, then specify assignments, resources, and ELO-specific information. The scenario functions as an overall framework from which elements can be omitted while its character and structure are preserved.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • A fixed collection of pedagogical scenarios available in the technical infrastructure
  • Domain content in the form of assignment texts, resources, and ELO-specific information

Constraints

  • Designers did not follow a scenario unthinkingly; LASs were left out, combined, or repeated, and larger missions were divided into content-related parts each following the scenario individually

Target Learners

  • Instructional designers of technology-enhanced learning environments

Learning Goals

  • Consistent pedagogy across missions
  • Reduced mission development time
