Description¶
The animation course used a repeating lesson-level design in which each session carried a named metacognition focus and families completed goal and reflection sheets: "goal and reflection sheets that allowed the families to record their learning experiences". Each element of the programme (story planning, modelling, trialling equipment, exploring animation techniques, filming, editing) was matched to one of the 5Rs, and the progression was mapped so that metacognitive elements and the animation process were closely associated to maximise opportunities for transfer.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Standardised course materials (presentation, family handbook, teachers' handbook) and goal and reflection sheets for each session
Constraints¶
- Fidelity depended on consistent use of course materials when school staff changed; scheduling and staff commitment varied across schools
Target Learners¶
- Year 4 pupils and their parents or guardians working together
Learning Goals¶
- metacognitive awareness of the learning process
- creating learning goals and reflecting on progress
