Description

Seven custom GPT chatbots (cGPTs) were co-created for six undergraduate units in a Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science program: Polymer Knowledge, Polymer Socratic, Physiology 1, Physiology 2, Medicinal Chemistry 1, Physical Chemistry 2, and Scientific Inquiry. Purposes ranged from a virtual tutor supporting scientific writing to Socratic chatbots guiding problem-solving and alkene halogenation. By the end of development, "seven distinct yet consistent student-staff-designed cGPT tools had been created, each tailored to its unit's content and learning activities".

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Built via the Create GPT function within an OpenAI Plus account, with system prompts and curated knowledge-base files

Constraints

  • Development took two to six weeks depending on topic, student experience, and available resources; model updates (GPT-5, Study mode) changed cGPT behaviour mid-project

Target Learners

  • undergraduate pharmaceutical science students

Learning Goals

  • discipline-specific problem solving
  • scientific writing
  • polymer concept understanding
