Integrated flipped classroom design framework combining FL cycles, SRL cycles, and metacognitive FC orientation

Description

The article proposes a conceptual framework of FC design with three main aspects: Flipped Learning (FL) Cycle, Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) Cycle, and Metacognitive FC Orientation. It is founded on interconnected theories — First Principles of Instruction, Self-Regulated Learning, the MUSIC Model of Academic Motivation, and Metacognition — because "a successful flipped classroom requires not only effective and engaging instructions and activities, but also self-regulated and motivated learners with metacognitive awareness." The FL cycle comprises online, in-class, and after-class stages; SRL cycles run in parallel with Proactive Planning, Performance Monitoring, and Learning Reflection stages; and orientation develops students' metacognitive knowledge about FC tasks, strategies, and themselves as learners.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Requires integration of the three SRL phases with recurring pre-class, in-class, and after-class learning activities to develop students' self-regulation skills required in FC
  • Requires effective FC design guided by a robust instructional design framework grounded in learning theories

Constraints

  • The authors state there are no existing FC studies that have fully implemented the entire framework; supporting evidence comes from three studies that incorporated one or multiple design aspects

Target Learners

  • higher education students
  • K-12 students

Learning Goals

  • self-regulated learning skills
  • metacognitive knowledge
  • academic motivation
  • active learning and higher-order thinking skills
