Description¶
SHINE specifies guiding principles that host schools use to design their own Saturday curriculum: a core focus on literacy and numeracy around a termly theme; opportunities to revisit areas of struggle and extend beyond weekday subjects; hands-on project work and enrichment applying learning to real-world contexts; curricular flexibility for trips and visits to re-engage demotivated pupils; and "an emphasis on investigative and collaborative learning and research projects which encourage problem solving and independent learning". The pattern structures a 25-week enrichment-oriented catch-up programme.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A termly theme chosen by the school linking literacy and numeracy work
- Educational visits connected to the theme and a subject area, funded from a dedicated budget
- Medium-term planning demonstrating how learning links between Saturdays
Constraints¶
- Schools, not SHINE, design the specific curriculum, so implementation varies by host school
Target Learners¶
- underachieving Year 7 pupils in the transition year of secondary school
Learning Goals¶
- literacy and numeracy consolidation
- problem solving and independent learning
- engagement and motivation
