Description

The iBuddy session is designed in two phases: (a) a highly engaging narrative-based playful simulation playable with all age groups, and (b) a flexible modular debriefing adjustable to the age group and to questions emerging in each session. The debriefing has two steps: behind-the-scenes modules (what happened, emotions, technical features, data deletion) and real-life modules (how the internet works, personalization, advertising, data value, profiles, terms of use, alternatives), combined usually 3 or 4 at a time.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Half of the session time is devoted to debriefing
  • Cliffhangers or pointers to the debriefing are integrated during the simulation design
  • A presenter leads and an operator prepares safe custom questions

Constraints

  • The debriefing path depends on participants' questions, age group and available time
  • The debriefing is less interactive and engaging than the simulation

Target Learners

  • students aged 11–20 in secondary, high school and university classes

Learning Goals

  • privacy awareness
  • understanding of data collection and processing
  • uptake of privacy-safe behaviors
