Description¶
The article proposes a three-component framework for designing cognitive training games that balances training effectiveness, motivation, and context. As printed, "this study proposes a situational cognitive training game framework that integrates cognitive training foundation, motivational design framework, and human–computer interaction framework". The cognitive foundation adopts classic inhibition trainings (Simon and Stroop tasks); the motivational design framework draws on Keller's ARCS model and Yee's gameplay motivation framework, using game elements to enhance challenge, confidence, and satisfaction; the human–computer interaction framework incorporates authentic contexts to promote immersion and engagement.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Classic inhibition trainings as the cognitive design basis to ensure training effectiveness
- Game elements aligned with ARCS factors and Yee's achievement and immersion components
- Authentic real-life contexts grounded in the human–computer interaction framework
Constraints¶
- Developed and evaluated for inhibition ability, one EF sub-skill, with university students
Target Learners¶
- university students
Learning Goals¶
- inhibition ability (executive function)
Claims¶
- Situational Training Games Higher Inhibition Than Casual [+M]
- Situational Games Higher Confidence Motivation [+M]
