Description¶
The article describes a set of six classroom activities targeting different levels of bottom-up processing: counting words, identifying lexical differences, syntactic predicting, highlighting connected speech, fill-in-the-blanks, and short transcriptions. Each was employed for approximately 10 minutes during three classes throughout the semester, using the same textbook audio as the contrast group. The activities address phoneme recognition, lexical segmentation, and chunking.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A source text such as textbook audio or authentic video from which sentences can be selected
- Teacher guidance to select sentences with problematic sound combinations or connected speech features
Constraints¶
- The six activities were used as a collective set, so the study could not determine whether one particular activity is more beneficial than another
- The short transcription activity may have affected dictation test results through task familiarity
Target Learners¶
- Lower-intermediate (A2 CEFR) Japanese university EFL students
Learning Goals¶
- Phoneme recognition
- Lexical segmentation of the speech stream
- Chunking and parsing connected speech
Claims¶
- Bu Instruction Improves Dictation Scores [+M]
- Bu Instruction Improves Listening Proficiency [+M]
- Positive Learner Perceptions Bu Activities [+M]
