Description¶
The experimental group completed a curated set of free online games and one market simulation, selected for "relevancy, level of rigor, time to complete, and ease of use". Role-playing games from the Doorways to Dreams Fund (Farm Blitz, Refund Rush, Celebrity Calamity) reward desired financial behaviors such as confining spending to budgeted limits and saving regularly; Financial Football, Gen I Revolution, and the Wall Street Survivor trading simulation cover money management, consumer credit, financial services, and investing. Each role-playing game took around 30 minutes.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Games must cover a wide range of personal finance concepts without difficult finance-course calculations
- Assignments submitted by finishing games online or handing in written learning reports

- Only selective portions of Gen I Revolution's 15 missions were assigned due to semester time constraints
Target Learners¶
- undergraduate non-business majors in a personal finance course
Learning Goals¶
- budgeting and saving
- risk and return
- consumer credit
- financial services
- investments
