Description

A six-session classroom intervention structured around the three phases of the SRL Cyclical Model, each phase spanning two weekly 60-min sessions. Sessions combined researcher-led discussion, strategy checklists, and practice on word problems, algebraic expressions, mental calculation and reasoning tasks. The control group "practiced on the same mathematics exercises as the SRL intervention group" without the SRL-specific activities. Delivered by a researcher to whole classes between October and November 2023.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Whole-class delivery with strategy checklists for goal setting, monitoring (including error handling, help seeking and time constraints) and self-evaluation, plus math exercises aligned across phases

Constraints

  • The intervention consisted of "only six sessions spread over a month and a half"; the authors note a more intensive or extended programme might yield broader effects, and that researcher-delivered interventions often yield larger effects than teacher-delivered ones

Target Learners

  • Year 6 and Year 7 middle school students

Learning Goals

  • Math performance and math-related motivational factors (perseverance, self-efficacy, utility value, STEM vocational interest, theory of intelligence)
