Description

A lesson-level sequence that alternates motivational phases with measurement points: a hearing introduction, a dance-performance phase to arouse curiosity, an animation phase supporting abstracting, three doing phases (reconstruction, white-box orchestration, black-box orchestration) implementing active involvement and progressive challenge, and a closing parallel simulation arousing aesthetic emotions. Nine questionnaires (Q1–9) are interleaved between stages to track emotions, challenge, and involvement. The article states that during the doing phases "students are invited to actively participate in the animations (Mayer and Chandler 2001) according to the principle of moderate-progressive challenge".

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Help-buttons indicating the next operation, and repeatable tasks on randomly generated inputs until solved correctly without help, to reduce anxiety and promote a sense of achievement

Constraints

  • The article notes that if e-learning materials are interesting only because they are novel, they may lose their appeal as learners become accustomed to them

Target Learners

  • undergraduate students
  • humanities-oriented students new to programming
  • sciences-oriented students initiated in programming

Learning Goals

  • computational thinking
  • understanding how sorting algorithms work
