Description

An intensive 6-week literacy unit embedded within two existing special education methods courses (mild interventions and intense interventions licensure programs) at a midsize Midwest university. "The 6-week curriculum was developed based on the NRP's (2000) Þve key areas essential for learning to read (i.e., phonemic awareness, phonics, ßuency, vocabulary, and comprehension)" plus emergent literacy and writing/spelling. The unit aimed to give candidates knowledge and skills to implement research-based practices suited to individualized student needs, not a curriculum to teach from directly.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Candidates must be enrolled in both special education methods courses, which are restricted to students accepted into the Teaching Curriculum for either licensure program.

Constraints

  • The unit is taught during the second half of the semester, which "leaves little time for participants to plan and implement literacy assessment and intervention activities at the conclusion of the unit."

Target Learners

  • Preservice special education teacher candidates in mild and intense interventions licensure programs

Learning Goals

  • Knowledge of literacy assessment and instruction across the five critical components of reading, emergent literacy, and writing/spelling for diverse learners with disabilities
