Description

The study designed and implemented sixteen activities based on the dimensions of mathematical measurement skills of length, area, weight, and volume, with four activities per dimension. Activities were prepared from outcomes and indicators in the Turkish Preschool Education Program, organized and finalized as 13 outcomes and 60 indicators after expert consultation with a preschool education specialist and a mathematics education specialist. The activities "allow peer interactions and they are ordered from easy to difficult." Examples include Animal Shelters (selecting objects of appropriate length), How to Cover It? (covering a surface), Bags (comparing weights), and Cylinders (comparing volumes). All activities were video-recorded with three cameras from different angles.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Outcomes and indicators based on children's measurement skills selected from the Preschool Education Program
  • Expert consultation with specialists in preschool education, mathematics education, and early childhood education

Constraints

  • Implemented two days a week, one activity per day, over approximately 10 weeks excluding holidays
  • Designed for a kindergarten class of 18 children aged 60–68 months, with two children as focal participants

Target Learners

  • Kindergarten children aged 60–68 months

Learning Goals

  • Mathematical measurement skills (length, area, weight, volume) and metacognitive knowledge expression
