Description

The study's instructional element is a quasi-experimental training program in which "The participants in all three experimental groups participated in sixteen sessions of strategy training". Ninety upper-intermediate learners, screened as homogeneous from 130 via a placement test, were divided into three classes of 30, each receiving one main strategy from Brown's (2000) taxonomy — metacognitive, cognitive, or social/affective — taught according to Oxford's (1990) training model. Three reading passages from Longman Complete Course for the TOEFL Test with 50 multiple-choice questions served as the outcome measure.
