Description¶
The article presents a small-group interaction framework (Figure 1) in which PBL small groups are "centered on the problem-solving cycle" across five stages: confronting, examining, re-examining, reviewing the problem, and presenting solutions. Grounded in Vygotsky's social learning theory and group cohesiveness research, the framework assumes learners are supported by teachers and peers, with heterogeneous grouping so proficient learners model successful outcomes. The study applies it in a university EFL reading course.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Groups should be heterogeneous, composed of both proficient and less-proficient learners, formed based on pre-test scores to ensure normal distribution of reading proficiency
Constraints¶
- The pedagogy focuses on small-group scaffolding specifically due to limited conditions in the EFL context, such as limited authentic immersion resources and test-oriented learning goals
Target Learners¶
- university EFL students at intermediate English level
Learning Goals¶
- English reading comprehension
- reading comprehension strategy use
- active English learning attitudes
Claims¶
- Pbl Significantly Improves Efl Reading Comprehension Taiwan University [+M]
- Pbl Fosters Active English Learning Attitudes [+M]
