Description¶
In the collaborative classroom the paper describes, "the teacher is a facilitator, setting up an environment for students to work together on all stages of the writing process", from getting ideas through several drafts. The line between teacher and learner is abolished, talk is encouraged because writing is viewed as internalized talk, and the classroom becomes a community of peers. It is contrasted with the traditionalist classroom of lectures and isolated assignments.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Students work together on all stages of the writing process, from getting ideas to organizing them and proceeding through several drafts to the completed paper.
- Students are encouraged to engage in conversation at as many points in the writing process as possible.
Constraints¶
- The paper names concerns for adopters: colleagues who think collaboration allows cheating, plagiarizing and ghost writing, and students who feel their individuality negated or are not prepared for active involvement.
Target Learners¶
- College composition students
