Description¶
The SQP2RS strategy, introduced by Vogt (2002) within the SIOP model, is a multi-step instructional framework for teaching reading whose steps are surveying, questioning, predicting, reading, responding and summarizing. The article describes how each step works — for example, in the survey step “the teacher leads students through whatever text is to be read by modeling their own thinking process,” and in the summarize step students work in pairs or groups to summarize the text’s key concepts using key vocabulary. The researchers integrated Writing to Learn (WTL) into all steps so students take notes, answer questions and write summaries, and prepared a teacher’s guide of activities applying the combined strategy to the tenth-grade English curriculum in Palestine.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Teacher modeling of each step the first time it is used, which Ruddel (2008) indicates is important for later effective use
- A teacher’s guide with reading texts, objectives, pictures, a worksheet, a poster and activities implementing the strategy
Constraints¶
- The study applied the strategy through science context with 10th graders in Bethlehem district public schools in the first semester of 2015-2016
Target Learners¶
- 10th grade EFL students in public secondary schools
Learning Goals¶
- English reading comprehension of content-area texts
