Description

This instructional pattern pairs memorable experiences (such as trips to local landmarks or visits from World War II veterans) with a fixed set of SRSD teaching elements used whenever a specific genre is taught. Teachers were asked to include discussion about the genre, pre-assessment, mnemonics, graphic organisers, self-scoring and graphing, self-talk, peer scoring and final assessment. The recommended mnemonic was IPEELL: "I= Introductory paragraph; P= Points; E = Examples/elaboration; E=End; L= Links (connectives, openers); L = Language (wow words, genre specific vocabulary, punctuation)". The American practice of self-talk was Anglicised using the terms positive talk and motivational messages.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • All schools in the intervention group were required to use the main elements of the SRSD writing programme in the teaching of writing, and all schools were asked to use the same graphic organiser (planning scaffold)

Constraints

  • SRSD had to be taught explicitly as part of Literacy lessons and further developed through topic work; teachers could combine lessons rather than stick rigidly to the prescribed model

Target Learners

  • Year 6 and Year 7 pupils, including those predicted below Level 4 in English

Learning Goals

  • Writing in specific genres, including persuasive and informative writing
