Three core concepts organizing introductory statistics: statistical model, distribution, and randomness¶

Description¶
In their introductory statistics textbook the authors selected three core concepts to organize the domain: statistical model (captured as DATA = MODEL + ERROR), distribution (following Wild, "the pattern of variation in a variable", including the sample data, data generating process, and sampling distributions of the distribution triad), and randomness as a data generating process. They state: "we chose to focus our textbook around three core concepts: statistical model, distribution, and randomness." Concepts were chosen for being connectable throughout the course, accessible to novices, not needing later unlearning, and jointly supporting coherent understanding.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Core concepts must be accessible to novices within their zone of proximal development
- Concepts must not need to be unlearned later and must form a coherent whole without introducing misconceptions
Constraints¶
- Concepts introduced to novices are almost always simplified in complex domains, and the authors warn against simplification that yields a collection of concepts failing to form a coherent whole
Target Learners¶
- Novice students in introductory statistics at the college level
Learning Goals¶
- Coherent conceptual understanding of statistics that transfers to advanced courses and data analysis practice
