Description¶
The training materials were structured learning materials such as short stories, games, and practical activities about numbers, developed for early math training for children from three to six years of age (Lucangeli et al., 2003) and for consolidation interventions (Judica et al., 2010). Activities focused on "the lexical area", "the semantic area", "the counting area", and operations in the pre-syntactic area (comparing and ordering quantities of up to five elements). Each math activity comprised a manipulation or movement game followed by a paper-and-pencil consolidation task, and the same materials were used for both the cooperative and individual training groups.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Delivered in 12 weekly meetings alongside the standard kindergarten math curriculum, with sessions of about 30-40 minutes for individual training and about an hour for cooperative learning
Constraints¶
Target Learners¶
- typically developing 4-5 year old kindergarten children
Learning Goals¶
- early numerical competence: counting, number words and symbols, comparing and ordering quantities
