Structuring PLCs with clear purpose and collaborative-work frameworks (High-Leverage Team Actions)

Description

Because PLCs without clarity of purpose may drift toward undirected planning or devolve into coffee chats, MiC districts organized PLCs more intentionally over time. Tim Kanold's High-Leverage Team Actions (HLTAs), 10 activities for collaborative work based on NCTM's Principles to Actions, encouraged "a focus on mathematics (with activities organized around a unit of study) and a process for iterative improvement of a PLC's capacity." Dinuba paired HLTAs with coach support, PLC-leader meetings, principal sessions, process maps, and reflection rubrics.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Structures that guide clarity of purpose for teachers' collaborative time
  • Support such as coach guidance, leader capacity-building, and monitoring (e.g., PLC team logs, reflection data)

Constraints

  • Research cited in the report notes teachers do not always find PLCs helpful learning structures, and fostering collaboration is difficult to do well and not a guaranteed path to improved outcomes

Target Learners

  • K–8 mathematics teachers in PLC teams
  • PLC leaders
  • Site administrators

Learning Goals

  • Improving collaborative teacher learning around mathematics instruction, high-cognitive-demand tasks, and formative assessment
