Description¶
Each 25–45-minute session followed a fixed sequence: 15–20 minutes of scripted phonics chart routines, 10–20 minutes of book reading at the student's instructional level, and 5–15 minutes of supplemental games, with a 100-point chart for effort. The article states "The lessons were very structured, which means that they followed a systematic phonics scope and sequence, implemented routine book reading procedures (e.g., making predictions, summarizing), and included explicit instruction with corrective feedback." All materials were provided so tutors made no curricular decisions.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Tutors follow scripted directions and a predetermined lesson sequence rather than selecting activities or materials themselves
- Texts are matched to each student's instructional level (approximately 90% accuracy) and placement is set by placement tests administered by professionals
Constraints¶
- The study did not compare different amounts of tutoring or levels of supervision, so the contribution of structure alone is not isolated
Target Learners¶
- Struggling elementary readers in Grades K–6 at risk for reading failure from low-income families
Learning Goals¶
- Word identification and decoding (phonics and word attack)
- Oral reading fluency
- Passage comprehension
