Embedding eight research skills into regular subject lessons through subject-specific task lists¶

Description¶
The article maps each of eight research skills onto concrete tasks in regular elementary subjects: mathematics, native language, literary reading, environment and technology. For example, the ability to see the problem is practiced in mathematics by finding text with excessive or insufficient content, in native language by composing a story as solving a problem, and in environment by observing natural phenomena. The ability to structure materials is practiced by making plans of text and representing data in tables and diagrams. This pattern operationalizes research-skill formation inside existing subject teaching rather than in a separate course.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Tasks must be selected so that each subject's ordinary content exercises a named research skill such as hypothesizing, questioning, classifying or proving
Constraints¶
- The task lists are illustrative content specifications for elementary-school subjects in the Russian curriculum context
Target Learners¶
- junior pupils aged 7-11 in elementary school
Learning Goals¶
- seeing problems, proposing hypotheses, asking questions, classifying, structuring materials, making discourse, proving ideas, representing results
