Description¶
A training paradigm in which transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation is delivered to the cymba concha and cymba cavum via ear-molded Ag-AgCl electrodes as 15 biphasic square-wave pulses (150 µs pulse width) at 25 Hz, beginning ~300 ms before and continuing 250 ms into each auditory stimulus. "Stimulation was delivered with a pulse amplitude of 0.2 mA below the participant's perceptual threshold", calibrated individually with a 0.1 mA-up/0.3 mA-down staircase, enabling participant blinding. The task itself is trial-based Mandarin tone categorization of 80 natural speech stimuli with visual corrective feedback, followed by a feedback- and stimulation-free Generalization block with novel talkers.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Individual staircase calibration of perceptual threshold so stimulation stays sub-perceptual and participants can be blinded.
- Temporal alignment of the pulse train with auditory stimulus onset.
Constraints¶
- Amplitude was limited to no higher than 3 mA due to safety restrictions.
- The article states the frequency of stimulation (25 Hz) was not manipulated and its effects cannot be assessed in this modality.
Target Learners¶
- Adult native English speakers unfamiliar with Mandarin Chinese (professional musicians excluded)
Learning Goals¶
- Learning to categorize non-native Mandarin tone categories by pitch contour
