Description

The Surveillance Scenario is a team task in Virtual Battlespace 2 (VBS2) in which "The Surveillance Scenario requires a team of two. Each member stands atop a building and is responsible for surveillance of a 180-degree zone." Members scan for enemies, verbally and by keypress alert each other to crossings (Transfer), acknowledge alerts (Acknowledge), and identify transferred enemies (Identify); unannounced identification counts as backup behavior. It follows an Event-Based Approach to Training model, is scalable in difficulty by changing enemy numbers, and was designed as an open-ended research platform agnostic of tutoring approach.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • A task requiring tutorable skills and enabling assessment; communication implemented through structured language or keypresses so it can be measured

Constraints

  • The current tutor "was not developed to use contextual markers to distinguish between true backup behavior and a fortuitous identification"

Target Learners

  • two-person teams in military surveillance training

Learning Goals

  • observation, communication, acknowledgment, identification, and backup behavior
