Description

The article adapts the Taba-Tyler curriculum model into a procedure for designing piece-specific instrumental etudes. It states that "the following basic steps of programming must be followed when designing an etude": identifying requirements, identifying the distant goal and objectives, selecting and arranging content, and selecting and arranging learning experiences. In this study the steps were instantiated from expert interviews, researcher observation, and analysis of the target pieces, producing etudes that followed the 'known to unknown' and 'simple to complex' principles with written explanations under each exercise.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Expert input to identify the technical challenges the etudes must address
  • Analysis of the target musical pieces, transposed into bass clef and a cello-suitable key
  • Written explanations under each exercise describing the behaviors to be improved

Constraints

  • Developed and evaluated for cello performance of Longa and Syrto forms in Turkish Music with eight conservatory students

Target Learners

  • senior undergraduate and graduate cello students at Turkish music conservatories

Learning Goals

  • overcoming technical and musical performance difficulties in Turkish Music pieces, including coordination between the right hand and the bow, détaché bow technique, and transitions between strings
