TANDEM radar-tracking simulation training task with 2x2x2 fully crossed experimental design (N = 350)¶
Design · All designs
Evidence · no claims cited
Description¶
The study's training task is TANDEM, a PC-based radar-tracking simulation requiring basic skills (hooking contacts, collecting information, classification subdecisions) and strategic skills (monitoring and prioritizing contacts approaching two defensive perimeters). Participants were 350 undergraduates trained in a single three-hour session; the study "employed a 2 (exploratory learning vs. proceduralized instruction) x 2 (error-encouragement framing vs. error-avoidance framing) x 2 (emotion-control strategy vs. no emotion-control strategy) fully crossed between-subjects design" with random assignment to the eight conditions.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Training manipulations are removed before the two transfer trials so performance reflects skill acquisition rather than the manipulations
Constraints¶
- Transfer was measured within the same session immediately after training, not on a delayed or workplace transfer task
Target Learners¶
- undergraduate psychology students at a large Midwestern university
Learning Goals¶
- operating a complex dynamic simulation task
- basic and strategic task knowledge
- adaptive transfer performance
