Description¶
The article describes TBL as an instructional activity sequence of three main stages — preparation, readiness assurance, and application of course concepts — in which the readiness assurance test determines "whether each participant is prepared for the next application step of TBL". Its sub-steps are the IRAT (individual MCQs), the GRAT (groups answer the same MCQs through "consensus-building discussion"), an appeals step to restore credit, and whole-class instructor feedback addressing misconceptions. The article uses this sequence as the structure across which it compares IRAT and GRAT performance.
Design Implications¶

- Each student is held accountable for their contribution to team performance
- The same scoring system is used for IRAT and GRAT when comparing them
Constraints¶
Target Learners¶
- healthcare professions students (medical, nursing, dental, pharmacy)
Learning Goals¶
- preparation for application-stage problem solving
- collaborative knowledge consolidation
