Description

Magical Garden implements the learning-by-teaching pedagogy: the child instructs a digital tutee (the teachable agent) and learns by doing so. Each scenario is, in the article's words, "always repeated in three successive pedagogical modes": the child practices the task alone, then demonstrates it to the watching TA, then supervises the TA's attempt, accepting or correcting the TA's proposal with happy/unhappy smileys. The design yields two stated pedagogical gains: repeated, non-repetitive task practice, and the chance to evaluate someone else performing the task, which is more feasible for young children than reflecting on their own actions under cognitive load.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • The child must be able to ascribe some knowledge to the TA that can differ from and be influenced by their own, and perceive the TA's behavior as goal-directed for meaningful instruction

Constraints

  • Full benefit requires understanding that the TA has agency; the article questions whether preschoolers' less developed theory of mind supports this

Target Learners

  • preschool children aged 4–6

Learning Goals

  • early mathematics and number sense within the number range 1–9
