Grint's techne–episteme–phronesis framework: authenticity and wisdom can be learned from experience but not taught¶
Design · All designs
Evidence · no claims cited
Description¶
The article adopts Grint's (2007) Aristotelian framework distinguishing three leadership development areas with separate outcomes: techne (teachable skills such as emotional intelligence and vision), episteme (the body of research and theory), and phronesis (experience-based wisdom in reading situations and self-reactions). The article argues most leadership courses cover only the first two, and that "leadership development can only be learned though one‟s own life experiences", motivating its learner-centred, experience-based design.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Learning of phronesis must draw on students' own experiences outside the classroom rather than instructor-led classroom exercises
Constraints¶
- The article frames the framework as applying to highly personal areas such as integrity, wisdom and authenticity, which it argues cannot be taught
Target Learners¶
- undergraduate business degree students in elective leadership courses
Learning Goals¶
- authentic leadership development
- self-awareness
- wisdom (phronesis) from experience
Claims¶
- Best Authentic Self Exercise Positive Evaluations [+W]
