Three design principles — authentic learning, deliberate practice, and scaffolding complexity — guiding iterative design of telementoring sessions¶

Description¶
The article's instructional design was guided by three theoretical principles: deliberate practice (effortful, goal-directed skill development and refinement, supported by expert feedback under conditions of high standards and psychological safety), Herrington's principle of authenticity (learning opportunities reflecting real-world settings and tasks reflecting the complexity of real-life practice), and scaffolding complexity within Merrill's first principle of instruction (the gradual increase in task difficulty alongside the progressive reduction of mentor support). These principles shaped a two-cycle iterative design, evaluation and re-design of telementoring sessions following initial in-person POCUS training.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- The intervention has to be grounded in theory and follow iterative cycles of design, implementation, and evaluation, as per the design-based research approach.
Constraints¶
- Adaptations were made throughout the project to adhere to the needs of participants within their authentic settings, such as adapting learning tasks to reflect prevalent clinical pathologies.
Target Learners¶
- Clinician trainees in low-resource settings
Learning Goals¶
- POCUS skill mastery through telementored practice
