Description

An audio-visual perceptual-learning paradigm in which "aba"/"ada" text is combined with an individually determined ambiguous /a?a/ speech sound during exposure blocks, shifting later auditory-only perception of the ambiguous sound toward the text. In this study children completed four runs with 24 exposure blocks and post-test trials on /a?a/ and its two flanking sounds, inside fMRI across three yearly sessions. The paradigm was "speci fically designed to investigate reading-induced changes in the left posterior STC" and avoided the working-memory demands of congruency paradigms.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Individual pre-test to identify each child's most ambiguous sound (response proportion closest to 0.5)
  • MR-compatible audio presentation in silent gaps between volume acquisitions

Constraints

  • Behavioural recalibration did not reach significance in the MRI environment in this age range, likely due to scanner noise or altered visual attentional focus
  • The simple two-word text stimuli may not optimally engage the VWFA

Target Learners

  • Children aged 8–11 learning to read in an orthographically transparent language (Dutch)

Learning Goals

  • Short-term perceptual learning of letter-speech sound associations; probing automatisation of audio-visual letter-speech integration

Claims

  • Multimedia Learning
