Theory of complex learning: three types of learning required for science knowledge acquisition¶
Design · All designs

Description¶
The article describes a theory of complex learning in which "knowledge acquisition in the sciences requires three types of learning: concept learning, causal explanation-based learning, and argument learning." Concept learning requires explicitness and compare/contrast procedures for novices. Causal explanation-based learning provides transferable knowledge of mechanisms, and failing to provide causal explanations results in superficial understanding. Argument learning emphasizes correcting learners' misconceptions by providing evidence in favor of correct concepts. The article used this theory to design a causally coherent multimedia lesson about the states of water.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Learning materials must describe all dimensions of the concept as well as dimensions that are not part of the concept
- Explicit visual models are needed to teach complex spatial and causal properties difficult to convey in words
Constraints¶
- These elements of complex learning cannot be supported through text-based instruction alone
Target Learners¶
- elementary-school children
- novice science learners
Learning Goals¶
- understanding observable and molecular properties of the three states of water
- causal explanation of physical science phenomena
