Description¶
The 2015 redesign of the Earth Materials and Resources course had three components: "geological concepts were taught in the context of case studies presented by the faculty, teams of students gave case study presentations, and active learning exercises were incorporated into class meetings." The components were aligned with course learning outcomes and survey questions (Table I), and active learning techniques were selected using Bonwell and Sutherland's active learning continuum framework.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Team-teaching by faculty to support breakout sessions and monitor activity effectiveness
- Advance selection of active learning techniques to scaffold and formatively assess learning outcomes
Constraints¶
- Implemented in a single 4-credit junior-level mining engineering geoscience course with 30 students
Target Learners¶
- undergraduate mining engineering students
Learning Goals¶
- connecting geoscience concepts to mining engineering applications
- improving attitudes toward geoscience
