Three quality criteria for digital formative assessment of deep conceptual understanding: relevance, validity, and in-depth informativity¶
Design · All designs

Description¶
The article proposes that a DFA for deep conceptual understanding must fulfill three criteria: relevance (focusing on the most relevant components of a topic), validity (appropriateness of inferences, including actionable diagnostic information for teachers), and in-depth informativity (combining in-depth insights into student thinking with automatable analysis). These criteria structure the four-step design process and are summarized in Fig. 5.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Prior to item construction, epistemological and empirical research in the subject-matter area is required to unpack topics into the most relevant concept elements
Constraints¶
- The digital assessment of deep conceptual understanding is more challenging to realize than the digital assessment of procedural skills
Target Learners¶
- Grade 5–7 students who struggle in mathematics
Learning Goals¶
- Deep conceptual understanding of basic arithmetic concepts
