Description

The article organizes CoBi around a routine in which "students establish, enact, and revisit CAs, occurring before, during, and after collaborative learning activities, respectively." Establishing introduces four CA categories (being respectful, being equitable, being committed to community, moving our thinking forward) adopted from OpenSciEd classroom norms, with group brainstorming and class-wide co-negotiation. Enacting runs CoBi's real-time feedback during collaborative work; revisiting has students view and reflect on visualizations with the teacher. The routine is embedded in a five-lesson Sensor Immersion curriculum unit.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Teacher facilitation of each phase; browser-based interfaces for brainstorming and logging agreements; time allocated for co-negotiation of class-wide agreements

Constraints

  • The establishing phase occurs once during Lesson 1 while enacting and revisiting are interspersed during Lessons 2–4; the revisiting phase was frequently cut short by time constraints

Target Learners

  • middle school students

Learning Goals

  • collaboration skills through community agreements and reflective practice
