Description

The investigated debriefings were organized around "a specific model for debriefing" with "three main phases: description, analysis, and application". Description begins with a 'blow out' in which each participant names one prominent feeling, followed by factual description of the scenario; the analysis phase, the most extensive part, is devoted to joint discussion and analysis of students' conduct; application involves students summarizing what they learned. Video clips of key events were introduced within the analysis phase.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • A facilitator guides the phases; the analysis phase hosts the displayed key-event video clips
  • Participating students and observing students who watched via live video

Constraints

  • Discussions focused primarily on what worked well and what could be improved rather than on what had not gone well

Target Learners

  • medical and nursing students in the final phase of their educational programs

Learning Goals

  • interprofessional teamwork, communication and non-technical skills such as SBAR, speak up and closed loop communication
