Description¶
The workshop comprised "three sequential phases: a brief introductory lecture, ultrasound practice, and hands-on biopsy simulation", delivered in small groups of four to five students over approximately 50 minutes per group. A ~5-minute lecture covered indications, complications, ultrasound principles, sterile technique, and needle handling; students then scanned each other (~5 minutes per student) and practiced simulated biopsy (~5 minutes each), supervised by a single board-certified nephrologist.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Small groups of four to five students to allow close supervision and active participation
- Supervision by an experienced nephrologist instructor
Constraints¶
- Total training time was limited; the authors state it did not provide sufficient repetition or mastery-based progression
Target Learners¶
- fifth-year medical students on nephrology clerkship
Learning Goals¶
- renal biopsy procedure knowledge
- ultrasound probe handling
- biopsy needle handling confidence
