Description¶
A standardized three-step pathway for teaching the abdominal POCUS procedure to ultrasound-naive medical students: an expert-reviewed e-learning module with theoretical assessment and individualized feedback, then "two simulator-based training sessions", and a blinded practical evaluation with an OSATS grid and checklist. In the pilot, "30 medical students (15 undergraduates and 15 residents) participated in a standardized three-step training program".
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Requires an ultrasonography simulator with standardized exercises, an online curriculum that adhered to the Royal College of Radiologists’ recommendations for ultrasound training, and blinded expert evaluators for the practical assessment
Constraints¶
- In this study, POCUS was treated solely as a procedure, without assessing the student’s clinical reasoning
Target Learners¶
- undergraduate medical students
- family medicine residents
Learning Goals¶
- performing an abdominal POCUS procedure
- classifying ultrasound images as normal or pathological
